Acryl Fentanyl: The “Undetectable” Opioid

Staff DRPJournal

September 29, 2024

Acryl fentanyl is a strain of fentanyl that is resistant to naloxone, otherwise known as Narcan. It’s also almost impossible to detect by most drug tests.

Acryl fentanyl is making headlines across the nation due to the fact that it is even more dangerous than fentanyl. It was recently wreaking havoc in Pennsylvania. Since then, it has been making its way to the streets in cities all over America. This strain of fentanyl is resistant to naloxone, otherwise known as Narcan.

This means that those who overdose on acryl fentanyl cannot be saved by naloxone. Even when multiple doses of Narcan is administered, the drug is unable to reverse the effects of the opioid overdose.

This drug is also extremely dangerous because it is difficult to detect. Most drug tests look for fentanyl, and not acryl fentanyl. It’s almost impossible for these drug tests to differentiate between fentanyl and acryl fentanyl. Due to this reason, acryl fentanyl is often mistaken for fentanyl or other fentanyl analogues.

Where Does This Drug Come From?

So, where does this prescription drug come from? This is one of the many synthetic opioids that seem to have appeared out of nowhere.

According to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), this opioid is most likely manufactured overseas and then smuggled into the U.S. This prescription opiate is legal in many countries, like Denmark, Finland and Swinland. It’s a controlled substance in many of these countries, and has also contributed to the opioid epidemic in these countries.

How Big of a Problem Is Acryl Fentanyl?

In comparison to many countries overseas, acryl fentanyl is not as big of a problem in America. With that said, this opioid has been making an appearance in America. The DEA expects this drug to become more and more popular, as it is not only potent but also cheap to make. When added to street drugs like heroin, acryl fentanyl can make the drug significantly more potent.

At this moment, this drug has already made waves in America. According to the National Forensic Laboratory Information System (NFLIS), 1,508 drug admissions to the DEA tested positive for this drug in 2017. This was a sharp rise from the 26 detected incidences in 2016.

This drug has caused many overdoses as well. It was linked to 44 overdose deaths in Chicago. Across the nation, acryl fentanyl may be involved in as many as 334 overdose deaths.

Overcome an Opioid Addiction

Anyone who is addicted to opioids is at risk for accidentally abusing acryl fentanyl. This is especially true for anyone who purchases their drugs through illegal avenues. Many drug dealers may buff their supply with acryl fentanyl. Many people who have overdosed on this drug did not even realize that they were taking it.

The best way to avoid acryl fentanyl is to overcome an opioid addiction. There are many evidence-based treatment approaches designed for treating an addiction to opiates and opioids. Opiate Replacement Therapy (ORT) is a particularly effective drug detox treatment for easing withdrawal symptoms.
